The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings topped the list of bestselling novels for 1938. The poignant tale was made into a film that keeps pretty much to the story, but loses a bit of the wistfulness of the book.
Other novels on the 1938 list are
#2 The Citadel by A.J. Cronin (#3 on the 1937 bestseller list)
#3 My Son, My Son! by Howard Spring
#4 Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
#5 Northwest Passage by Kenneth Roberts (#2 on the 1937 bestseller list)
#6 All This, and Heaven Too by Rachel Field
#7 The Rains Came by Louis Bromfield (#9 on the 1937 bestseller list)
#8 And Tell of Time by Laura Krey
#9 The Mortal Storm by Phyllis Bottome
#10 Action at Aquila by Hervey Allen
I’m sure you recognized some titles on that list from your reading, the movies, or even from reviews on this blog.
As you will learn. some of the titles you may not have heard of are marvelous books. I’ll tell you which ones I think are best, starting next week with The Yearling .
Happy reading!
